How Does V-Sync Settings Help Improve Your Gaming Experience?

Graphics are an important part of your gaming experience.  Modern-day games demand a good graphics processor that can handle fast action graphic effects. Many computers now have a graphic processing unit to process graphics without the help of a CPU. Your computer will have integrated graphics within your processor or an independent graphics card. The graphics processor’s responsibility is to project visuals onto the screen.  You are going read this article about what is VSync in gaming?

An important aspect of display systems that helps graphic processing is the refresh rate. Higher the refresh rate, the better the gaming experience. Usually, the monitor comes with a 60 Hz refresh rate, implying that the screen refreshes itself up to 60 times per second. A high-end gaming monitor can offer more than a 200Hz refresh rate these days. The faster your monitor can refresh your screen the smoother your gameplay will be.

Some computers cannot handle the graphic processing power demanded by most modern-day games. As result issues like screen tearing and aliasing are rampant while playing games. You might often find yourself going to settings and tweaking the graphic controls. If you have ever looked at the video or graphics options in a PC game, you might have noticed a toggle for a setting called VSync.

This setting helps you sync the graphics of your game with the refresh rate of your monitor.

The dynamic adjusting of a monitor’s refresh rate to the frame rate of the graphics card is called adaptive syncing. Adaptive sync prevents tearing, stuttering and judder and was primarily developed for the video game industry. Adaptive sync was standardized by VESA and implemented in the company’s embedded DisplayPort (eDP) and DisplayPort 1.2a interfaces. AMD adaptive technology is called FreeSync and AMD’s adaptive sync technology is G-Sync.

What Is VSync in Gaming

What Is VSync in Gaming?

VSync or Vertical synchronization is the adaptive sync technology available in most monitors. It was created to resolve screen tearing faced by computers while playing videos. A screen tear horizontal line that appears on the image dividing it on the screen. This contributes to the loss of picture clarity.

Tearing is most commonly the result of a mismatch between the frames your hardware is projecting and the refresh rate of your display.  This means that your graphics card is sending a new frame while the current frame is being displayed. VSync reduces this tearing by pushing the graphics hardware to sync with the refresh rate of your display. This setting causes the frames to be rendered and displayed at the same rate, almost eliminating tearing from your display. However, VSync might limit your performance.

Since the frame rates are being limited to the refresh rate of your display your GPU will not be able to achieve maximum performance. There is an input lag which might become problematic for games that demand immense graphic abilities like action games. While VSync might cause a judder in your gaming experience, FreeSync attempts to address some of these limitations.

What is FreeSync?

While Vsync attempts to adjust the rate at which frames are relayed to displays, AMD’s FreeSync technology dynamically adjusts the display’s refresh rate to equal the rate at which graphics hardware is transmitting frames. FreeSync can keep up with changes in FPS as the refresh rate is dynamic.

What Does FreeSync Do to Eliminate Display Flaws?

FreeSync commands the monitor to continue displaying the current frame until a new one is received from the graphics hardware. This makes the monitor display images at the same rate as they are being relayed. The supported refresh range for FreeSync displays is between 9 to 240 FPS. Since it is a hardware solution involved in the display of your monitor, you don’t have to compromise on performance to enable FreeSync. AMD announced the second generation of FreeSync in 2017, and the unique selling points were HDR support and low latency.

One of the major downsides to FreeSync is that it requires an AMD GPU to work since it is a proprietary technology. If you are using one of Nvidia’s cards then you will need a G-sync display.

What Is G-Sync?

G-Sync is a type of display technology from Nvidia used in certain PC monitors, gaming laptops, and TVs. Nvidia introduced G-Sync in 2013 and is the arch-rival of AMD FreeSync. This technology plays a similar role to other adaptive syncing technologies to fight screen tearing, stuttering, and juddering, especially during fast-paced action and adventure games. This technology only works when the display is connected to a system using a compatible Nvidia graphics card including third-party graphics cards.

G-Sync displays have a variable refresh rate and can match their minimum and maximum refresh rates with the Nvidia graphics card of your system. The technology can achieve a refresh rate as high as the monitor’s maximum refresh rate. Thus, you see images right when they are rendered. When you move the cursor your mouse will move simultaneously without any lag.  There are now three tiers of G-Sync: G-Sync, G-Sync Ultimate, and G-Sync Compatible.

If you don’t want to toggle with the settings or use other technology to improve your graphics, then you can invest in a gaming laptop with high-end graphics that promise an immersive gaming experience. Here are a few of the best gaming laptops with excellent performance.
