You might have heard about GTA Vice City, GTA San Andreas, and GTA V. Grand Theft Auto [GTA], a game that lets you do unimaginable things in the virtual world. You could hijack a plane, do wild stunts, engage in a nerve-racking bank robbery, and even do some Fast and Furious style driving. GTA is a wildly popular game both among kids and adult gamers.
After a successful kick-off in 1997, the game took the virtual reality world by storm. GTA has since then released numerous titles. These are just a few of the most popular titles from the GTA arsenal. GTA V is the longest-running title from the game series. These titles are available on various editions of Microsoft Xbox Sony Playstation consoles and PC.
A few months back in May one of the popular GTA titles, GTA: Online was available for free on Epic Games Store. A large number of people downloaded this game on their PC because not everybody owns a Playstation or an Xbox. The Games Store’s server experienced high traffic and many people experienced slow loading times and crashes when they tried to download the game. This should give you an idea about how popular the game is.
Also contributing to the Epic Games Store’s traffic were people who already own these gaming consoles. Since the game was available for free these console owners also downloaded the game on their PCs. However, their stats and other achievements earned on their respective consoles failed to get transferred to the GTA on their PCs. This meant that they had to start all over again to progress in the game.
This is where the concept of cross-platform comes to mind. Cross-platform play is a concept that gained wide popularity over the past couple of years. High profile games like Fortnite, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Rocket League, and Minecraft has popularised this feature.
Cross-Platform Play
Cross-platform play is a feature that lets different gaming platforms, for instance, PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, etc. to share the same online servers in a game. This allows you to play with your friends regardless of the platform they are using for gaming. For instance, if you are playing GTA V on the PC and want to team up online with another friend, then the latter should be gaming GTA V on a PC as well.
Is the GTA V Cross-Platform?
GTA V does not support cross-platform play. Even though Rockstar Games rolled out the game across various storefronts and systems, you can only play GTA V with other players on the same system you play.
Cross-platform support posed a problem when Rockstar brought GTA V from Xbox 360 and PS3 to current generation consoles. Although it has been seven years since its release, Rockstar has not yet launched cross-platform support for GTA V.
There are different versions of GTA V for PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360. The game developer has also confirmed that the game will be playable on the yet to be released Xbox Series X and PS5 as well. On the PC, GTA V is available on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Rockstar’s proprietary Social Club launcher.
However, there is no clarity regarding when cross-platform play is coming to GTA V. The gaming community has been waiting for a long time since Microsoft announced cross-platform support. Rockstar has still not broadcast any announcement despite the release of two high-end gaming consoles looming over the horizon.
Imagine it: you and your friends want to play Fortnite together, but one of your friends doesn’t have a good gaming PC or an Xbox. Can Xbox and PS4 play Fortnite together? They can, and it’s a great example of cross-platform games.
